Technical Summary

The 121FINDX8-234 is a 12-inch ferrite pro mid-woofer designed for professional 2-way PA speaker systems, touring cabinets, and permanently installed enclosures crossed to a compression driver or horn. It shares the 121FIND platform with the 4-ohm 121FINDX4-233, featuring the same weatherized glass fiber treated paper cone, M-shaped fabric surround, non-flammable Nomex spider, and coated steel basket. The 8-ohm nominal impedance provides a standard single-driver amplifier load. Sensitivity is 96.6 dB (1W/1m). With a Qts of 0.60, this driver uses a compliant suspension design suited to moderate-volume enclosures with extended low-frequency response; sealed enclosures are the preferred alignment for this Qts value, with vented available for higher efficiency PA applications.

Sealed enclosures are recommended as the primary alignment. Three options are provided: 28 litres (Qtc=1.00, −3 dB ≈ 83 Hz) as the practical compact format for stage monitors and 2-way PA; 17 litres (Qtc=1.20, −3 dB ≈ 93 Hz) for compact installations relying on subwoofer support below 90–100 Hz; and 49 litres (Qtc=0.85, −3 dB ≈ 77 Hz) for permanently installed systems where a larger enclosure is acceptable and maximum sealed bass extension is required. Vented (bass reflex) alignments using a 100mm round port are provided as an alternative for PA and touring: 25 litres tuned to 68 Hz (port 204 mm), 35 litres tuned to 60 Hz (port 187 mm), and 50 litres tuned to 52 Hz (port 174 mm); physical port tube lengths of 99–129 mm fit easily within standard 12" pro cabinet depths.

The 121FINDX8-234 handles approx. 250 W AES and 500 W continuous power, delivering a peak SPL of 121 dB at 1 metre (AES). A high-pass filter at 45–80 Hz is recommended depending on alignment. Operating bandwidth is approximately 70–843 Hz, with cone beaming onset near 843 Hz defining the upper limit and a required crossover to horn at 800 Hz to 1.2 kHz. The higher Le of 0.52 mH compared to the 4Ω-233 variant makes a Zobel network (5.6 Ω / 18 μF) more important to flatten impedance rise through the crossover region.

Compared to the 121FINDX4-233, this 8Ω variant offers twice the Xmax (3.75 mm vs 1.85 mm) and twice the volume displacement, providing substantially more bass output capability at high excursion and better suitability for standalone bass reproduction. It is suited for sealed 2-way PA and stage monitor enclosures; vented touring PA cabinets requiring deeper bass extension; and permanently installed 2-way systems in venues where standard 8-ohm amplifier matching and increased excursion headroom are required.

Key differences:
  • 234 (8Ω) has 2× the Xmax and 2× the Vd → significantly more
    bass output capability per watt at high excursion
  • 234 has higher Qts (0.60 vs 0.52) → sealed alignments are more
    natural; vented possible but requires larger enclosures
  • 233 (4Ω) has lower Le (0.32 mH) → flatter impedance through the
    crossover region; preferred where passive crossover accuracy is
    critical
  • 233 suits 4Ω amplifier loads and parallel daisy-chain
    configurations; 234 is the standard 8Ω single-driver load
ENCLOSURE RECOMMENDATION
Qts = 0.60 → Both sealed and vented enclosures are viable.
Sealed is the preferred alignment for this Qts value, providing
controlled transient response and predictable rolloff. Vented is
viable where deeper bass extension or higher efficiency are required
for PA/touring applications.
SEALED ENCLOSURE ALIGNMENTS (PRIMARY)
Formula: Vb = Vas / ((Qtc / Qts)² − 1)
         fc  = Fs × (Qtc / Qts)
         f-3dB: u = [−(2 − 1/Qtc²) + √((2 − 1/Qtc²)² + 4)] / 2
                Ω = √u ;  f-3dB = Ω × fc

--- Sealed A — 28 L / Qtc = 1.00 ---
  Vb = 49.8 / ((1.00/0.60)² − 1) = 49.8 / 1.778 = 28.0 L
  fc = 63 × (1.00/0.60) = 105.0 Hz
  f-3dB = 0.786 × 105.0 = 82.5 Hz → 83 Hz

  Practical compact sealed format for stage monitors, 2-way PA,
  and installed systems. Controlled transient response; suited to
  applications where excursion protection and predictable rolloff
  above 80 Hz are the priority.

--- Sealed B — 17 L / Qtc = 1.20 ---
  Vb = 49.8 / ((1.20/0.60)² − 1) = 49.8 / 3.00 = 16.6 L → 17 L
  fc = 63 × (1.20/0.60) = 126.0 Hz
  f-3dB = 0.736 × 126.0 = 92.7 Hz → 93 Hz

  Minimum practical sealed volume. Suited to compact installations,
  under-stage fill, and systems relying on a dedicated subwoofer
  for content below 90–100 Hz. Mandatory high-pass filter at
  80–100 Hz (DSP or passive).

--- Sealed C — 49 L / Qtc = 0.85 ---
  Vb = 49.8 / ((0.85/0.60)² − 1) = 49.8 / 1.007 = 49.4 L → 49 L
  fc = 63 × (0.85/0.60) = 89.3 Hz
  f-3dB = 0.859 × 89.3 = 76.7 Hz → 77 Hz

  Maximum bass extension for a sealed alignment; enclosure volume
  is large for a touring PA cabinet but practical for permanent
  installation. Well-damped response; preferred for installed
  systems where a larger footprint is acceptable and flat extended
  bass is required.
VENTED ENCLOSURE ALIGNMENTS (ALTERNATIVE — PA / TOURING)
Port: 100 mm round (Ap = 78.54 cm²)
  Vd = 199.1 cm³; a 75mm port approaches the hi-fi velocity limit
  at tighter tunings (>17 m/s). 100mm is specified for PA
  applications; 75mm may be used for Fb ≤ 55 Hz where velocities
  fall within hi-fi limits.

Leff = (Ap × c²) / (4π² × Fb² × Vb) ; Port velocity: v_peak = Vd × 2π × Fb / Ap
  Vd = 1.991 × 10⁻⁴ m³ ; Ap = 7.854 × 10⁻³ m²

                    = 9.298×10¹⁰ / 4.564×10⁹ = 204 mm
  Alignment B: Leff = (78.54 × 1,183,360,000) / (39.478 × 3600 × 35,000)
                    = 9.298×10¹⁰ / 4.974×10⁹ = 187 mm
  Alignment C: Leff = (78.54 × 1,183,360,000) / (39.478 × 2704 × 50,000)
                    = 9.298×10¹⁰ / 5.337×10⁹ = 174 mm

Physical tube lengths (Leff minus ~75 mm end corrections): 99–129 mm —
easily accommodated in any standard 12" pro cabinet depth.

--- Vented Alignment A — 25 L / Fb = 68 Hz ---
  Compact PA cabinet, tuned above Fs. Strong mid-bass output and
  excursion protection. Suited to compact 2-way touring cabinets
  and stage monitors.

--- Vented Alignment B — 35 L / Fb = 60 Hz ---
  Balanced alignment near Fs. Recommended general-purpose vented
  format for standalone 2-way PA and installation enclosures.

--- Vented Alignment C — 50 L / Fb = 52 Hz ---
  Extended low-frequency coverage to approximately 49 Hz.
  Suited to larger installed 2-way enclosures without a dedicated
  subwoofer. Mandatory high-pass filter at 40–45 Hz.
CROSSOVER AND SYSTEM INTEGRATION
Crossover to compression driver on horn (acoustic): 800 Hz – 1.2 kHz
  f_beam = 843 Hz (primary upper constraint — identical to 4Ω variant)
  f_Le = 1,622 Hz (above crossover; Le rise at crossover is more
           pronounced than the 4Ω-233 variant due to higher Le)

  Le = 0.52 mH (higher than 233's 0.32 mH); a Zobel network is
  more important for this variant to maintain crossover flatness
  at 800 Hz – 1.2 kHz.

Zobel network:
  R_z = 5.3 Ω (use 5.6 Ω nearest standard)
  C_z = Le / Re² = 0.52e-3 / 28.09 = 18.5 μF → use 18 μF, 100 V non-polar
